Our Programs:

Thousands have benefited from our programs since we opened The Barry Joyce Cancer Resource Center. Whether offered weekly, bimonthly, or monthly, there is something for the patient, caregiver, and anyone affected by cancer in our area. Because of the community’s support, these programs are offered at no cost to our friends.

Each week, we offer a seated yoga class to unwind and destress. Our weekly LifeStyles class continues to grow as well. Participants gain information about nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, supplements, and more. All proven to help fight cancer.

Twice a month, we offer a support group for those currently fighting cancer. There is a separate group for caregivers. You may choose to participate in person, or virtually.

Once a month, we offer Creative Escapes, Lunch and Learns, and Pot Luck Dinners. Our Daycations are also a favorite. We’ve been to Hanging Rock, Mt. Airy, the Planetarium in Chapel Hill, and Old Salem. Sometimes we choose to make it simple with lunch and a move. Regardless, it’s a day full or relaxation, fun, and laughs.

We always take a week in the summer to focus on children affected by cancer. Perhaps that have (or have had) a sibling, parent, or grandparent with cancer. They’ve been scared and they’ve been strong. We give them a week with other children they can relate to. Others that have gone through similar circumstances. For this week they only have to focus on being a kid and Barry’s Buddies Day Camp allows them to do just that. We’ve been to Carowinds, Celebration Station, local farms and parks, lunches and movies, and more. Seeing the smiles and hearing the laughs is priceless.

About Us:

In 2001 Barry Joyce had the vision to help Rockingham County residents in need. Research during his battle with prostate cancer made him aware of how very few resources were available for cancer patients in the area. The Joyce family came together and The Fund was created to help fulfill this critical need.

Since its inception, The Barry L. Joyce Local Cancer Support Fund has assisted hundreds of cancer patients and their families in Rockingham County. We have financially helped every patient that has applied and been in need of assistance. The Barry Joyce Cancer Resource Center allows us to help on an emotional and educational level as well - both of which are just as important when dealing with something as devastating as cancer.

This has been in thanks to the overwhelming support of so many in our community. We are truly grateful to all of those that have helped us make a difference and continue to support our mission because the need is great and continues to rise.
Our Services:

Barry had the vision to help Rockingham County cancer patients financially. He knew that if we could do this, that would allow for more energy for our friends to fight their cancer. We have been doing just that for the past 20 years and we have never turned away a single person in need. Not one.

Financial support can include assistance with power bills, gas cards, pharmaceutical bills, and more. We have provided dentures to friends after chemo wreaked havoc on their teeth and eye glasses for friends so they could see to drive to their appointments. We’ve provided beds when our friends had none. We’ve had houses fumigated for fleas so radiation treatments could continue. We’ve cleaned houses when friends grew too weak to do it on their own. We’ve provided air conditioning units in the summer and heaters in the winter. We provided food so that our friends not have to worry about where to get their next meal. There is never a need that we will not consider.

The Barry L. Joyce Cancer center does several things throughout the year for families dealing with cancer including providing food and supplies to families in need. Even Sampson, the dog gets involved and helps deliver heaters and air conditioning units in the winter and summer.
